You are the light of the world.
What a creative idea--to dispel darkness. It was an idea God had at the beginning of creation.
"And God said, 'Let there be light.' And behold there was light." Then when God chose to redeem
creation we read, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word
was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him
nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of men. The light
shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not overcome it."
(Matthew 5:14
NRSV)
There was quite a story in NEWSWEEK magazine a couple of years ago. Titled, "Pass the
Moonscreen, Comrade," the story told about a project that scientists in Russia have embarked
upon. It is the deployment of a solar-reflecting satellite that scientists hope will bring a little light
to long wintry northern nights in that cold desolate country. An 82-foot diameter satellite will
circle our earth that will be as illuminating as 10 moons. Lucky Earthlings in select cities
throughout the Northern Hemisphere may be awash in an eight-mile-wide spotlight from space.
Says a spokesman: "Young eyes . . . will be able to read by it." Or moonbathe by it. If tests go
well, the consortium will create a constellation of reflectors.
Dear God, may I too reflect your light of love. Amen.
