For this is the message you have heard from the beginning, that we should love one
another.
It was when the children began talking with their neighbors about their mission project that they
met resistance. "There were other projects to help local people, why didn't they raise money to
help them?" some of the neighbors wanted to know.
One skeptical neighbor, who had just finished telling one of the students he was a born-again
Christian, was surprised by the boy's reply. "That's great!" the boy interrupted, "then you know
why I want to help the Russian people understand the Bible. If they read and understand it, they'll
also be converted, like you." The man had nothing to say. With much work the students raised
enough money and the Bible commentaries were sent to Russia, but not without encountering a
lot of people who were resistant to these young people doing anything for our former enemies.
(1 John 3:11
NRSV)
A huge project was under way to translate Bible commentaries and send them to Russia.
Christians in Russia have very few such books. As the project continued more and more people
were interested in it. The children at the Locust Grove Mennonite School in Smoketown,
Pennsylvania decided to raise money for printing the commentaries. This would be their mission
project for the school year.
Dear God, help me to not be resistant to sharing of your message of love. Amen.
