So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away;
see, everything has become new!
We like just about anything new--and that includes a new year. We have celebrated Christ's
coming into our world and into our hearts. This new year also gives us the opportunity to start
fresh and new. May this year be more full of our faithfulness in receiving and giving God's love in
Jesus Christ.
(2 Corinthians 5:17
NRSV)
We have a tendency to fall in love with anything new. We forget there is a downside to some
things. Take computers. There was a church secretary in Ohio who was preparing a funeral
service for a woman named Edna. The previous funeral at the church was for a woman named
Mary. So the secretary simply called the earlier worship form onto the computer screen and used
the search and replace function to substitute "Edna" for "Mary." Imagine how disturbed the pastor
was when he noticed that the Apostles' Creed, which the congregation recites during the funeral
liturgy, included the line "...born of the Virgin Edna."
Dear God, thank you for a new start. Help me to have a great year as I grow close to your love.
Amen.
