But when he saw many Pharisees and Sadducees coming for baptism, he said to them, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?"
(Matthew 3:7 NRSV)

It's easy to hear a Biblical message to repent or change our ways only to think that it somehow doesn't apply to us. We think that the message to repent is meant for sinners not good people who go to church. But John the Baptist's message is for us. It is a call to examine ourselves, to awaken us.

Matthew reports that even the Pharisees and Sadducees, the religious officials of the day, traveled out to see John and be baptized by him. John wasn't supportive of them. He called them, a "brood of vipers!" These were the respectable people in John's day. People like you and me. John wanted people to understand that his message was for them. It is a message for sinners like you and me. It is time to prepare ourselves to meet Jesus Christ. It is time to repent, and Jesus comes to us in the season to bring forgiveness and salvation.

Lord Jesus, please forgive me of my sin, especially the sin of pride. Amen.
