I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his
sufferings by becoming like him in his death, if somehow I may attain the resurrection from the
dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to
make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own.
May we not be satisfied with where we are. God wants us to be great. Jesus said, "Be perfect,
therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect." With Christ's help, we can move on to perfection!
(Philippians 3:10-12
NRSV)
United Methodist Bishop Alsie Carleton (now retired) was in a serious automobile accident. He
was well on the road to recovery when someone called his wife. From the next room he could
overhear the conversation. Not only could he overhear the conversation but his wife knew that he
could hear it. When the caller said, "I hope he's just great now," the Bishop heard his wife reply,
"Well, I would not say he was ever great, but he's back to where he was."
Dear God, help me not to be satisfied with where I am at, and challenge me to achieve greater
heights of serving you. Amen.
