The choicest of the first fruits of your ground you shall bring into the house of the
LORD your God.
There is a story of a family who called the Butterball Turkey hotline, with this question, "We have
a turkey that's been in our deep freeze for 10 years. Is it still good?" The hotline home economists
replied, "It is probably still a good turkey, but it probably won't taste fresh." "Oh, that's what we
thought. I guess we'll just donate it to the church."
I wonder if this story doesn't say something about our true thanksgiving to God. Do we only give
our leftovers to God?
(Exodus 23:19
NRSV)
One this day after Thanksgiving, there will be a lot of leftovers, especially turkey sandwiches. Do
we give God more than our leftovers?
Lord Jesus, may I give my first fruits to you and not what is left over. Amen.
