The LORD passed before him, and proclaimed, "The LORD, the LORD, a God
merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness.
How true those words seem today. The speed, direction and degree of change occurring before
our eye's is incomprehensible. A social scientist wrote that we are exposed to more information in
a single day than our grandparents were in their entire lifetime.
Is there anything in our lives that is not undergoing change? Where are the stable foundations in
our world? Moses said, "Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God,
keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his
commandments.
God faithfulness is always the same to us. May our thanksgiving truly honor God's faithfulness
through our own faithfulness.
(Exodus 34:6
NRSV)
Some years ago, archaeologists were excavating ruins in the Middle East and came across a
carved stone. It was engraved with words from another civilization. When they were translated
this was the message "Alas, things are not what they used to be".
God of peace, move me to a greater sense of faithfulness to you and to those I serve. Amen.
