So even to old age and gray hairs, O God, do not forsake me, until I proclaim your
might to all the generations to come.
"Do you think that getting him a bike might improve his behavior?" asked Dad.
"I doubt it," Mom sighed. "But at least it will spread it over a wider area."
I wonder if my mom and dad were happy to get me a bike when I was a kid. I grew up in rural
Indiana, and I spent a lot of time riding my bike. I'm sure it particularly gave my mom some
peace.
There is another wonderful story of a dad and his friend who took his little daughter, Ellen, to a
movie for her birthday. After they left the theater, while dad was bundling up Ellen against the
cold wind, his friend asked her how old she was.
"I can't tell you," Ellen said. "I have my mittens on!"
Well, I cannot use my fingers to tell you my age, but it is for much different reasons than Ellen's.
I turn 38 today for those of you who are curious. God has truly blessed many of those years. Each
passing year of my life seems to move me closer to God and eternity. May God also bless all of
your birthdays!
(Psalms 71:18
NRSV)
Today is my birthday, which reminds me of a Mom and Dad who were trying to find a birthday
gift for their wildly rambunctious little boy.
Dear God, happy birthday. Amen.
