"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I
consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations."
But who does God say we are? "Even before you were born I knew you . . ." God says to
Jeremiah. God knows you too!
(Jeremiah 1:5
NRSV)
Burton Mays says that once when one of their children was small and had been
misbehaving, he found himself at the end of a stern parental lecture. "What are we going to do?"
asked the adult. In self-resignation the child suggested, "Why don't we jes' frow me ina garbage."
That, says Ms. Mays, has become the signature statement for any time when a family member is
frustrated with himself: "Jes frow me ina garbage, I guess." This is where many people see
themselves.
Dear God, thank you for knowing me. May I come to truly know you in my heart. Amen.
