Jesus took a loaf of bread, and after blessing it he broke it, gave it to the disciples,
and said, "Take, eat; this is my body."
Jesus took the bread we eat and turned it into something special. Jesus told us that when we
celebrate the Lord's Supper, we are doing it so we can remember how He died for us. The bread
represents Jesus' body that was broken for us. In our celebration, we can remember that Jesus
loved us enough to die for us.
(Matthew 26:26
NRSV)
Do you eat bread? Most of us do. In the USA, most bread is made from wheat. But people all
over the world eat bread made from all kinds of different foods. In Mexico, some bread is made
from corn. Have you ever had cornbread? It's really good. In China, some bread is made from
rice. The Native Americans used to make bread from acorns. In Europe, some bread is made out
of rye. All over the world people eat bread. We may all use different ingredients to make bread,
but we all eat some kind of bread.
Dear God, thank you for bread and for Christ's broken body, so that I may have life. Amen.
