In my Father's house there are many dwelling places. If it were not so, would I have
told you that I go to prepare a place for you?
To be a Christian has always been to embrace Jesus' teachings and views. Because he believed in
another life so firmly, Christians have believed, too.
We take the reference to "God's house" as a metaphor for heaven or life after death and the use of
the word "mansions" to be a way of describing, at the very least, "abiding places". So, we take
from Jesus that there is heavenly housing for the human spirit on the second lap of its journey.
Were Jesus to speak contemporary English, we might hear him say to us: "Don't sweat it!
Though there may not be either available or affordable housing in your present community, there
is plenty in the future community to which we are all headed.
(John 14:2
NRSV)
It is an unassailable fact that Jesus firmly believed in human existence after death. The things he
had to say on the subject are simply too numerous to recall, but the best known statement is: "Let
not your heart be troubled...In my Father's house are many mansions."
Lord Jesus, death scares me, but, through your reassurance, help me to be prepared. Amen.
