I the LORD your God am a jealous God, punishing... those who reject me, but
showing steadfast love to the thousandth generation of those who love me and keep my
commandments.
May we not subtlety reject the ways of God. Lest we go hungry spiritually.
Don't forget to attend church today!
(Exodus 20:5-6
NRSV)
Do any of you eat potatoes? Do you like them? What about carrots? Do you eat carrots? Have
you ever tried a turnip? These three vegetables have something in common. A couple of hundred
years ago, lots of people wouldn't eat them. About 200 years ago, in parts of Europe, people
thought that potatoes were bad for you, that they caused leprosy. Nobody would eat potatoes.
And there were people back then who wouldn't eat carrots or turnips either. They thought
carrots and turnips were dirty and not very good for you. Today, we know that potatoes, carrots,
and turnips are very healthy foods. But back then, many people went hungry because they just
wouldn't eat certain foods. They rejected perfectly good food, they threw it away, because they
didn't know what it was.
Loving God, if I am really honest, there are many subtle ways I reject you. Forgive me and fill me,
so that my spiritual needs will be met. Amen.
