Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.
Don't you love a person with a sense of humor? A person with a sense of perspective? A person
who doesn't take himself or herself too seriously? If so, then you really ought to love Jesus of
Nazareth. Jesus had a terrific sense of humor. He made puns. He used hyperbole--extreme
exaggeration. And he kept people off-guard with his unique perspective on life. An Old Testament
prophet described the coming Messiah as a "man of sorrows and acquainted with grief." Some
Christians have taken that text to mean Jesus was somber all the time. Absurd! Would the
common people have heard him gladly if he had been an old sourpuss? John the Baptist baptized
multitudes, but nobody ever said they "enjoyed" hearing John the Baptist. People enjoyed hearing
Jesus. If you can imagine Jesus with a smile on his lips and a twinkle in his eye when he said some
of the things he said, his teachings come alive.
Do you allow the joy of life to fill your life?
(Luke 6:21
NRSV)
Barbara Bush once compared herself to her predecessor: "Nancy Reagan adores her husband; I
adore mine. She fights drugs; I fight illiteracy. She wears a size 3; so's my leg."
Loving God, thank you for the joy, humor, laughter, and smiles that make your love in me
more full. Amen.
