Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! Truly I do not know how to speak, for I am only a
boy."
Not surprisingly, Jeremiah did what most prophets of God before him had done. Jeremiah
protested, saying that he was no great speaker. He pointed out his age and inexperience. But the
Lord promised to be with Jeremiah and told him not to be afraid. God touched Jeremiah's mouth
and gave him words to speak. And speak them Jeremiah did. He became one of God's most
eloquent speakers.
God may be asking us to do something that will not be easy. Will you do it?
(Jeremiah 1:6
NRSV)
God came to a young man named Jeremiah and called him to be a prophet. The life of a prophet
was difficult and even dangerous. Jeremiah would not be a popular messenger. But this was God
speaking to Jeremiah. God told Jeremiah that He had known him and had planned his calling even
before Jeremiah was born. This was not a call to be taken lightly.
Lord Jesus, the call to follow you is not always an easy one. Help me to do what I am called to
do. Amen.
