Sell your possessions, and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear
out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys.
Jesus says the most important thing we can spend money on is God's work. If we spend our
money on clothes, someday those clothes will wear out or get too small for us. Yes, we need
clothes, but what we have is not nearly as important as God's work.

(Luke 12:33
NRSV)
My mother has always had a fish tank full of fish. They are a lot of fun to watch. Lots of people
particularly like goldfish. But the first people to ever own goldfish were the Chinese people. Back
a thousand years ago, the Chinese people kept all kinds of fish, for food and for decoration. And
one day, one of those fish gave birth to a beautiful, shiny, golden-colored fish. No one had ever
seen a fish like that before. Everyone wanted to buy it, so gold fish would cost thousands of
dollars. Today, gold fish are very common and you can buy one for a dollar or so.
Dear God, may I wisely use my money, so that I can honor you in my giving to
your work. Amen.
