God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ
our Lord.
(1 Corinthians 1:9
NRSV)
There are two separate dimensions of this word in the New Testament. It speaks of the sharing
known between believers, one to another. This is the human dimension of the fellowship of the
church. The early Christians had all things in common. They shared with each other all that they
had in life. The second dimension speaks of the sharing that we know between God and the
believer. There is a fellowship, a communion that we know with God the Father, Son, and Holy
Spirit.
How is your fellowship?
Ronald Newhouse, Texas, USA
The word that we translate "fellowship" from our New Testament is a word rich in meaning and
imagery. It is koinonia. It literally means "to share," or "to be partners." It was also used in the
Greek world of the early church to describe the sharing a couple knows in marriage. It was used
of a business partnership. It speaks of something that the church must know if it is to survive.
Prayer: Dear God, may I use the opportunities you give me to meet needs and to be
drawn closer to you. Amen.
