And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the
heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on
him.
(Matthew 3:16
NRSV)
When John baptized Jesus, the Holy Spirit came down on Jesus. Later the Holy Spirit came on
some of his friends and they became powerful preachers. When we ask God to come into our
lives, God gives us power, the Bible teaches us. Something happens inside us and we become new
people. It may not be as dramatic as the effect of mixing vinegar and baking soda, but in the long
run it is far more significant. For when God changes us, we become God's instruments. When that
happens, we can change the world.

Have any of you ever mixed baking soda and vinegar? If you've ever made a homemade volcano
with your children or when you were a kid, then you've probably played with vinegar and baking
soda. Now baking soda by itself doesn't do anything, it just sits there. And vinegar by itself
doesn't do anything but smell bad. Not very interesting, are they? But mix the two and watch it
bubble up! When vinegar and baking soda are put together, they have a lot more power than
when they are by themselves.
Prayer: God of all, bring your Holy Spirit into my life to help me change the world for
your glory and honor. Amen.
