You shall have no other gods before me.
There is a true story that happened about 300 years ago in Holland. The tulip was a very popular
flower in Holland. It was very pretty, and the people of Holland made money by growing tulips.
But after a while, the people of Holland decided that the tulips were the most valuable things in
their society. They started to spend hundreds and thousands of dollars to buy and sell and grow
tulips. Some people sold their houses or their horses or their businesses just to buy tulips. Why
did they get so excited about this flower? I don't know, but for some reason, they decided that
the tulip flower was the most valuable thing in their society. Eventually, the tulip trade died down
in Holland, but hundreds of people lost all their money and became very poor because they had
spent too much money on tulips.
We know that tulips are not that important. But just like the people of Holland 300 years ago,
sometimes we forget what is really valuable and important in life. Our relationship with God
should be the most important thing in our lives.

NRSV)
The Bible says that we can all be followers of Jesus if we want to be. But before we can follow
Jesus, we must leave everything we have behind. Nothing can be more important to us than
Jesus. Our relationship with Jesus and God has to be the most important, valuable thing in our
lives. Only then are we truly following God.
Prayer: Dear God, help me to keep you as the most important focus in my life. Amen.
