The LORD God formed man from the dust of the ground, and breathed into his
nostrils the breath of life; and the man became a living being.
(Genesis 2:7
NRSV)
I understand that the early Greek shipbuilders, when raising the great mast that would complete
the construction of their ships, would always first place a gold coin under the spot where the mast
would rest, so that even if the ship went down and was lying on the ocean floor rotting away,
there would still be something of value in it.
The writer of the Book of Genesis says that when God created the first man and woman, He
created them in God's own image and breathed into them God's own breath God's own Spirit.
Even if all the world tells you that you are nothing, don't you believe it! You have a Friend who
sees deep down in your heart your real worth.

In the motion picture THE LAST PICTURE SHOW there is a character known as Sam, the
Lion. He has befriended a young man and a middle-aged woman. When he dies the woman says to
the young man something like this: "It's a shame to go through your whole life and discover just
one person who sees your real worth."
Prayer: God of all, thank you for making me in your image. Help me to feel my real
worth. Amen.
