Clothe yourselves with the new self, created according to the likeness of God in
true righteousness and holiness.
"I don't know," she answered, "that's just the way my mother always did it." One
day he bravely asked his new mother-in-law why she cut both ends off of a ham
before she cooked it.
"I don't know," she answered, "but that's the way my mother always did it." Finally
he asked his wife's grandmother why she always cut both ends off of a ham before
she cooked it.
"Oh," she said, "it's because I only had one pan to bake with, and it was too small
for the whole ham."
I share this story with you because we can take comfort in the memories of our
families and friends. We can take comfort in knowing that through Jesus Christ we
will have victory over death, but we need to let go of the things in our lives that are
not helpful. If it no longer makes sense to cut off both ends of the ham don't do it.
Grief is important, but we also have a life to live in honor of our Father in heaven.

NRSV)
I read a revealing story a few years ago about the young wife who always cut both
ends off of a ham before she cooked it. It bothered her new husband whenever she
did it. One day he could take it no longer. "Please tell me, honey," he said, "why do
you always cut a piece off of both ends of a ham before you cook it?"
Prayer: Dear God, help me to let go of the things that are of no use to my spiritual well
being. Amen.
