Jesus answered, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God
without being born of water and Spirit." (John 3:5
NRSV)
In the cover of darkness stood Nicodemus beside Jesus. Jesus told him the truth about being born
anew by water and the Spirit. Part of him wanted to believe but another part held him back. We
cannot always put Jesus off. We cannot live forever on borrowed faith. Our greatest need it to
surrender to the cross of Jesus Christ everyday of our lives.

Two sales reps looked out of the showroom window, they saw a man who was going around
kicking tires on the cars. He was also raising the hoods and banging the fenders. One sales rep
said dryly, "Look at that guy out there. He's a wheel kicker." Apparently this man had visited
this used car lot before and had done the same thing. He could never decide if he really wanted to
buy a car or not. They continued to watch as this man kicked the tires. "He'll say the wheels are
out of line. He'll listen to the motor and say, 'Hear that knock?' Nobody else can hear the knock,
but he can hear it. Something is always wrong. He is afraid to choose; he can never make up his
mind, so he always finds an excuse."
Prayer: God of renewal, I sometimes live on borrowed faith. Help me to carry the cross
of Christ everyday. Amen.
