See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way
before you. (Matthew 11:10
NRSV)
There is an old Amish saying that goes like this: "We didn't inherit the land
from our fathers, we are borrowing it from our children." Jesus lasts words
to the disciples in Matthew was, "All authority in heaven and on earth has
been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing
them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and
teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And
remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age." You and I have
been given much in our faith and in this great country. Will our children and
our grandchildren be able to say the same? We are only one generation away
from faithlessness. We must share God's giving spirit with our children and
with others.
I remember one turkey who said to another: "I don't know about you, but I
always give thanks the day after Thanksgiving."
Will our children be able to give thanks after us?
Prayer: God of all, help me to prepare the way for those who will follow me, so that they
may know you. Amen.
