Blessed is anyone who endures temptation. Such a one has stood the test and
will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him. (James 1:12
NRSV)
I recall a story about a young boy who wanted a pair of skates. His parents, hoping to teach him
the value of money, informed him that he would have to save the required amount from his
allowance. His mother overheard him in his room one afternoon shaking his bank and counting his
money. Then she heard the bell on the ice cream truck ringing loudly on the street outside.
His mother waited to see what would happen. There was no sound from the room until the truck
bell could no longer be heard. Then a childlike voice was heard, "Dear Jesus, please don't let the
ice cream truck come down my street anymore."
I think that is a very good idea. As the Lord's prayer says, "And lead us not into temptation, but
deliver us from evil, for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I know there is temptation all around me. Please give be the strength
not to give into it. Amen.
