At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to
bottom. (John 1:5
NRSV)
There are some persons who think Christians are being presumptuous when we proclaim that
Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. If there is one thing religion has taught us, it is that it is a
vain gesture to reach up to God. Our arms are not long enough. So God has reached out to us.
God became one of us and somehow through the miracle of the cross God has made it possible
for us to share in the eternal.
Connection with the eternal gives us hope that we can overcome our troubles. Connection with
the eternal gives us love for our neighbors, which always comes back to us through others who
love us. And connection with the eternal gives us forgiveness so that we can in turn give others a
second, third, or fourth chance in life.

I remember reading about a church choir who was raising money to attend a music competition
and decided to have a car wash. To their dismay, after a busy morning, the rain began pouring
down in mid-afternoon, and the customers stopped coming. Finally one of the women printed this
poster: "WE WASH," (and with an arrow pointed skyward) "GOD RINSES!" Business started
booming again. This choir was bridged together by the rain in working cooperatively with God.
Jesus is the one who bridges our lives with God.
Prayer: God of community, keep me connected. Amen.
