Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have
commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. (Matthew
28:19-20 NRSV)
In the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, there was a portrait of a women playing the cello. There
was elderly woman who came day after day and stood for long periods of time in front of the
portrait. The guard of the museum noticed the woman and, when his curiosity got the best of him,
he went over, tapped the woman on the shoulder, and asked why she stood so long before the
portrait. The woman, with obvious irritation, turned to the guard and said, "Hush, young man!
Can't you see I'm listening to the music!"
Somehow in our witness to the world in which we live we need to present a portrait of Christ--his
life, his death, his resurrection and his continuing presence in our lives. We need to present a
portrait that has authenticity, that is real and vibrant.
In one of his writings, Jewish Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel said these startling words: "There
are no proofs for the existence of God: there are only witnesses." Will you be a witness for
Christ?
Prayer: Dear Jesus, move me today to be a good witness for you. Amen.
