I remember a story of two men that had met after not seeing each other for some 25 years. It was obvious that their financial situations were different. The first man had married into a wealthy family. The other man was of modest income, but he had a wonderful and happy family.
They soon found themselves without anything to talk about. The wealthy man said, "Isn't this last minute shopping awful?" The second man said, "It's not too bad. I'm just here to get some wrapping paper. My wife and I finished our shopping back in October."
The wealthy man who attended a lot of social events said, "It sounds like you are well organized, but tell me... how in the world do you know in October who your friends will be in December?"
If we don't know in October who our friends will be in December, then I think we need to experience Christ's light. Knowing who our true friends are seems to me to be the way of the cross. And there is one friend we can always count on--Jesus Christ.
God of light, thank you for giving me the light and joy that comes from having a savior. Amen.
