But those who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength, they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31 NRSV)
I came across a paragraph in a novel that accurately described how many arise on Monday morning: "The light of Monday morning shines on them as they restlessly sleep. When the alarm rings, they mistake it for the telephone. Their children are away at a summer rock and roll festival and he has a feeling that one of them is sick or in trouble. When he comprehends that it is the morning alarm, and not the telephone, he puts his feet onto the floor. He groans. He mumbles. He struggles to stand and stretch."
"His wife groans in pain as she awakens and quickly grabs his pillow and covers her face, so she can grab a few more quick winks of sleep. He slowly stumbles to the bathroom and scares himself when he sees his reflection in the mirror. His eyes are bloodshot, his face is drawn and it takes almost all of his energy to turn on the water and shave. This is how 70% of the American population faces Monday morning; tired, weak, spiritually dead."
People of every age have felt spiritually tired and worn and weary deep down in their souls. But then people like the prophet Isaiah have risen to the occasion to say, "Don't do it; don't quit; don't give up!"Dear Jesus, help me not to give into my weariness. In Jesus name, Amen.
