Rid yourselves, therefore, of all malice, and all guile, insincerity, envy, and all slander. (1 Peter 2:1 NRSV)
Someone once wrote, "Envy says, 'I want what someone else has. I want it and I'll do whatever I can to get it. But if I cannot have what I want, I don't want anyone else to have it either. If somebody does, I will destroy them! Either in reality or at least in my heart . . . I'll undermine them, I'll want to believe bad things about them, I will listen to slander and gossip about them, and I will spread it all around, maybe in real subtle ways so I don't look unspiritual, but I will do it!'"

It happens in families. It happens in small groups. It happens in churches and it will kill community. To the extent to which you find yourself engaged in that kind of behavior and letting envy have free reign in your life, it will destroy you and destroy community around you and, friends. Destroy envy or envy will destroy you.

God of peace, root out the envy in my life. In Jesus name, Amen.
